The disaster in Nepal is a sobering reminder of how fragile life can be—and how urgently help is needed. Alongside practical assistance, GCMM is committed to bringing the hope of the Gospel to those facing loss and uncertainty. This is not a new connection—our ministry among the people of the region began years ago through radio and the Maithili-language Superbook.

Disasters suddenly bring distant suffering close. Behind every image in the news of a destroyed home is a family—a life filled with loved ones, memories, and hopes for the future.

For those affected by the disaster in Nepal, the immediate needs are the most basic: food, clean water, and safe shelter. When the foundations of everyday life are suddenly swept away, the focus becomes simply getting through today.

But amid loss, another, deeper question may also arise:

Where does my help come from?

Hope in the Midst of Disaster

Hannu Haukka reminds us that as catastrophic events affect us all, we can look beyond what is happening around us. In Matthew 24, Jesus speaks of wars, famines, and earthquakes—events Haukka sees reflected in the world of our generation.

Yet Jesus’ message is not one of fear, but of hope. Even in difficult times, believers can lift their eyes and hold firmly to Jesus’ promise that He will return. As Luke 21 encourages us, we can take courage and lift up our heads with confidence.

Hope calls us to more than simply wait.

It calls us to respond with compassion, reaching out to those who are suffering and offering help where it is needed.

Meeting Urgent Needs, Sharing God’s Love

While meeting the immediate need, GCMM also wants to share the lasting hope of the Gospel of Jesus to communities where the ministry already has longstanding connections.

The heart of Christian relief begins with an individual—their need, and realities they are facing. Those who are hungry need food, those who have lost their homes need shelter, and those who are afraid need a sense of safety. But people also need someone who will listen and remind them that they are not alone.

The Gospel speaks of God who cares for people even in the midst of crisis. The love of Jesus calls us not only to share that message of hope, but to demonstrate it through practical acts of compassion. A helping hand, a listening ear, and a word of encouragement can mean so much when someone’s life has suddenly been turned upside down.

A Longstanding Connection with the Maithili People

GCMM’s connection with the people of Nepal goes back many years. In 1998, pastor and missionary Tomi first travelled to the Maithili region, where ministry began through local radio, sharing the Christian message with people in their own language.

When funding for his radio ministry later came to an end, a connection was established with GCMM, allowing the broadcasts to continue. This partnership also led to a new project: translating and dubbing Superbook into Maithili so that children and families in Nepal and northeastern India could experience Bible stories in their own language.

The Maithili programs were completed, but they were never broadcast. For years, the recordings remained unused—until April 2025, when the missing tapes were rediscovered in GCMM’s archives. By then, the media landscape had changed dramatically. The internet and video platforms offered new opportunities to finally bring these programs to the people for whom they had been created.

For Tomi, the discovery renewed a vision that had begun decades earlier:

“Now Superbook can bring the clear message of the Gospel to the Maithili people. God has opened the door. I would have no peace if I don’t give it my all.”

When the Gospel Speaks Your Language

The animated Superbook series brings the stories of the Bible to life for children in a way that is engaging and easy to understand. And when children hear these stories in their own language—the language they speak, think, and ask questions in—the message becomes even more personal.

This is one of the strengths of media ministry. A program created today can continue reaching children and families for years to come, opening conversations about faith, love, and hope. Behind each translation are people who have given their time, skills, and financial support to make that possible.

The history behind the Maithili-language Superbook is a powerful example of this long-term impact. A work that began many years ago now has a new opportunity to reach another generation—to communicate a message that can carry people through different seasons of life, particularly in challenging times.

Help for Today, Hope for Tomorrow

Psalm 121 gives words to a question that often rises in times of crisis: “Where does my help come from?” The psalmist lifts his eyes and finds his answer in the Lord, Creator of heaven and earth.

That same trust calls us to respond. We can pray, extend practical help, and make it possible for the Good News of Jesus to reach those who are hurting.

Disasters may quickly fade from the headlines, but for those affected, rebuilding lives can take months or even years. The need continues long after the world’s attention has moved on. This is why ongoing prayer, compassion, and support are so important.

Please pray for the people of Nepal and for those carrying out relief work. Pray for protection for families, strength and comfort for those who have suffered loss, and wisdom for those working to bring help where it is needed most.

Through your support of GCMM, you can help meet practical needs while also bringing the hope of the Gospel to people facing an uncertain future.

Together, we can bring help for today and hope for tomorrow.
