Meet the people behind our mission

Founder & CEO, Board Member
Dr. Hannu Haukka is the founder and CEO of Great Commission Media Ministries and serves on GCMM Canada’s Board of Directors. His ministry journey began with a deep burden to reach people behind the Iron Curtain, including carrying Bibles into the Soviet Union during a time when access to Scripture was severely restricted. In the 1970s, Hannu met Laura, who would become both his wife and ministry partner. Together, they began serving with a shared conviction that media could open doors for the Gospel where traditional ministry was limited, restricted, or impossible. That conviction has shaped GCMM’s work for decades, helping share the hope of Christ through broadcast media, digital ministry, humanitarian response, and strategic ministry partnerships. Under Hannu’s leadership, GCMM has reached millions of people in some of the world’s hardest-to-reach places. Today, Hannu continues to lead GCMM’s Mega City Media Campaigns and remains closely involved in the ministry’s humanitarian response in Ukraine, regularly travelling to support partners, strengthen accountability, and oversee relief efforts on the ground. Hannu holds a Doctor of Theology from Trinity Western University and serves on the NRB International Committee. He brings spiritual vision, strategic leadership, and a lifelong commitment to proclaiming the Gospel with courage, humility, and faithful stewardship.

Canadian Director
John Haukka has been involved with GCMM’s ministry since its early days, beginning with visits to the Soviet Union in the 1970s, including carrying Bibles into the country during a time of significant restrictions. In 1986, John joined Hannu and Laura Haukka in Finland, assisting with ministry operations and the development of the first video editing suite. He helped edit and duplicate the first seven episodes of Superbook onto VHS tapes, which were later carried into the Soviet Union and eventually contributed to the program being aired on Soviet national television. Since 1991, John has developed and led GCMM Canada, building the ministry’s operations, donor relationships, and administrative foundation. He also helped establish GCMM’s U.S. office, supporting the ministry’s expansion in North America. John has travelled extensively to participate in GCMM campaigns in cities such as Kyiv, Mumbai, Chennai, Kathmandu, Havana, and Addis Ababa. His on-the-ground involvement has helped connect Canadian supporters with the ministry’s field work while strengthening relationships with international campaign teams and local ministry partners.

Deputy Director
Garri Sergienko serves as Deputy Director for GCM Ministries Canada. His connection to GCMM began as a child in the former Soviet Union, when he watched the Superbook series aired on Soviet television through GCMM’s early media ministry. Garri holds a master’s degree in International Relations of the Middle East and received Christian television production training through GCMM. For 18 years, he served in Russian-language Christian television production in both Russia and Canada, creating Gospel-centred media for children and families and leading large ministry events in partnership with local churches in Russia and Ukraine. He also served as national director of a Canadian Christian ministry working in Israel. Today, Garri brings deep experience in media ministry, international relations, cross-cultural partnership, and Christian leadership to his role with GCMM Canada. His work reflects a heart for the people of Ukraine and the Middle East, a deep commitment to media ministry, and a passion for reaching people in places where access to the Gospel is limited.
