Mega City Media Campaign in Tanzania

Launched in 2019 • Reached millions in Dar es Salaam • Expanded nationwide

Tanzania Mega City Media Campaign (2019)

Planned over two years in partnership with 2,000 churches, the campaign was designed to reach 5,000,000 people in 30 days in Dar es Salaam—supported by TV and radio coverage expected to extend nationwide and beyond Tanzania through Swahili-language media. In October 2019, the Mega City Media Campaign launched in Dar es Salaam, and public response grew quickly. Over 30 days, the campaign generated 140,000+ calls to the call centre, and follow-up needs accelerated—driving large-scale distribution of the Swahili Power to Change book (90,000 were printed and quickly ran out). Media agencies estimated the message reached 7–9 million people as it spread beyond Dar es Salaam and across the nation.

1,000+ Volunteers Trained for Follow-Up

As the Mega City Media Campaign launched in Dar es Salaam, the response created an urgent need for follow-up. More than 1,000 church volunteers completed special training and were approved to serve on the call centre phone team and as book couriers, helping connect people with resources and next steps. The campaign’s reach extended far beyond the city. Reports described calls coming from across Tanzania, and the call centre staying busy daily—evidence of how quickly the message spread and how important local follow-up became.
A Life Transformed
He was on a mission to convert every Christian in Tanzania to Islam, all the while searching for answers in spiritual practices that left him empty. But when he encountered Jesus, his life changed completely. When his story was shared during the campaign, thousands called to ask how they could find that same faith and hope.

Call Centre Follow-Up Continued

For many Muslims, it is a risky step of faith to contact a Christian call centre or to talk to believers. Yet, even after the Mega City Media Campaign officially ended, the Dar es Salaam call centre stayed active and continued to receive several hundred calls per day as people reached out for help, prayer, and resources. Of the 147,000 calls received during the campaign, 80,000 people were identified for follow-up. Local church leaders shared encouraging follow-up stories, of which one pastor reported that during the campaign, 377 people he knew had made commitments to follow Jesus. Another pastor shared that 18 people from a non-Christian background received Jesus in his church that week, and this was only the beginning. As requests continued, demand for the Swahili Power to Change book quickly outpaced supply, and GCMM reported that more needed to be printed to meet the response.
