Mega City Media Campaign in South Sudan

Launched in November 2018 • Continued impact beyond the campaign

Juba, South Sudan — Mega City Media Campaign (2018)

In South Sudan, the Mega City Media Campaign launched in November 2018 and quickly became a monumental undertaking—reaching millions and prompting an extraordinary national response centered in Juba. From day one, outdoor advertising across the city and prime-time national radio/TV testimony stories drove a surge of calls to the call centre. To reach communities where literacy is limited, GCMM also distributed solar-powered Digital Audio Players to villages across the country.

Juba’s Mega City Media Campaign newspaper is sparking an overwhelming response—so many readers called the Juba call centre in the first days that the phone system jammed and tens of thousands couldn’t get through. Most numbers were saved for follow-up, and extra security arrangements help volunteers handle the evening call surge safely.

Food and Essential Supplies Delivered in Juba

By the end of December 2018, partners in South Sudan helped deliver practical help to families affected by conflict—providing staples like rice, corn, vegetable oil, flour, salt, and sugar. The South Sudan Council of Churches coordinated local distribution in the capital city of Juba, supported by additional partner organizations. Supplies arrived by truck and were shared with people on waiting lists, with volunteers working to keep the process orderly even when crowds grew anxious about shortages.

Digital Audio Players (DAP) Reached Thousands of Villages

With literacy estimated at around 70% across South Sudan, printed materials alone wouldn’t reach many families. That’s why 20,000 solar-powered Digital Audio Players (DAPs) were distributed from Juba to villages and communities across the country. Preloaded in four languages—South Sudanese Arabic, Dinka, Nuer, and Bari—the devices made it possible for people to listen together and understand the message in their own language as distribution expanded over many months. UNESCO estimated that many communities in South Sudan face significant barriers to education, with limited access to schools and books in thousands of villages. At the press of a button, the audio units would play stories of radically changed lives and instruct villagers how to receive Jesus and become His followers—helping households listen instead of relying on print, even in hard-to-reach areas where distribution required careful planning and coordination.
Hope for a Father
A father in South Sudan lost his job and slid into deep poverty, unable to provide for his children. A businessman offered him a devastating deal: “I promise to give you money and employment if you sell your son.” The next day, torn by desperation, the father saw an outdoor advertisement that read, “God gives the power to forgive… Call now to get yours free.” He called the number, reached a volunteer, and was urged not to sell his child. The volunteer met with him, shared the Good News, and the story concluded with the father choosing a different path—finding hope and coming to faith.

A National Moment—and a Long Reach Into Villages

As the campaign message of forgiveness spread, it reached beyond individuals and into public life—prompting national attention and a widely broadcast call for reconciliation. Follow-up continued in practical ways: people kept contacting the call centre, and distribution teams carried audio resources outward from Juba to villages over the course of the year. The result was not only a citywide response but an ongoing movement of listening, learning, and community follow-up across South Sudan.
